Mackenzie Foy stands out in 'Breaking Dawn -- Part 2'

Mackenzie Foy stands out in 'Breaking Dawn -- Part 2'

The young star plays a pivotal role as a half-vampire, half-human child of Edward and Bella Cullen.

5:14PM EST November 18. 2012 - LOS ANGELES – As The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 smashes records worldwide, the spotlight is on its pint-size half-human, half-vampire breakout star, Mackenzie Foy.

Foy, 12, agrees "it's a little weird" how much she looks like her on-screen parents Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. "Kristen's eyes are green just like mine. And then Rob is kind of goofy. I'm kind of goofy like Rob," she says, curling up today at the Ritz-Carlton in skinny jeans, a plaid shirt and slim navy high-top Converse sneakers.

Ever-vocal Twihards agree, and have assembled Twitter handles like @NessieMackenzie, @MackenzieFarmy and @MissKenzieFoy in her honor. "I've noticed that Mackenzie is a HUGE fan of Converse, just like Kristen," tweeted fan @MissKenzieFoy.

In the new film, Foy's role is expanded from her brief turn in Part 1, playing a young half-bloodsucker who grows rapidly. "One hour she'll be an infant and the next she'll be a toddler," says Foy, whose face was transposed onto younger body doubles through CGI.

Foy had fun on set, from riding a furry mechanical bull (meant to be Jacob the werewolf) to keeping a swear jar for her older stars and donating the proceeds to St. Jude's hospital. "Some of them paid me in advance," she said, laughing. Although Stewart, "did say a couple bad words, I'm not gonna lie," Foy describes Stewart, who guards her character ferociously in the film, as a " best friend-sister-mom all combined."
Plus, she got some cool downtime with the cast. "I heard Kristen play her trumpet," she says, laughing. "Rob got her a trumpet and you could hear in the hotel."

The chatty, friendly young actress recently saw a Starbucks fall pin-drop quiet when she walked in, but sweetly shrugs off all the attention she's receiving. Her friends treat her normally, she says, and the home-schooled actress is still having fun off-screen painting, kicking butt as a junior black belt in tae kwon do, and baking her own birthday cakes, a tradition she loves.

Born and raised just outside of Los Angeles, Foy's parents, a homemaker and truck driver, had no connections to the entertainment industry. Spotted at a dance recital at age 3, Foy soon began booking print jobs modeling, followed by commercials and TV shows. Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 was her first film.
As a parting gift, Foy got to take her character's dragonfly pin with her. "It's pretty special," she says. (She left a few behind, too.

Foy estimates she lost five baby teeth over the course of the two-year production.)
Next projects including horror flick The Conjuring opposite Vera Farmiga. But could there could be more to the story of Jacob and Renesmee (as author Stephenie Meyer has teased)? "I think it'd be fun to come back to Renesmee and see what her life is beyond what Part 2 ends with," says Foy. "I think it would just be cool to see where her life takes her."

TWILIGHT-SAGA
I

Say what you will about the Twilight series, but you can’t fault it for being inconsistent.
The popular vampire franchise’s final installment, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, scored the eighth biggest opening weekend of all time with a $141.3 million debut. If Summit’s estimates hold up, that’s just a touch ahead of Breaking Dawn – Part 1, which started with $138.1 million last year, and just a touch behind New Moon, which opened with $142.8 million in 2009.
Impressively, Breaking Dawn – Part 2 also earned $199.6 million in its international debut this weekend, giving it an early global total of $340.9 million. When all is said and done, the film will likely finish just above $700 million. After all, the last three Twilight films — Breaking Dawn – Part 1, Eclipse, and New Moon — earned $712.2 million, $709.8 million, and $698.5 million, respectively. Like I said, it’s a remarkably consistent franchise.

That consistency may be why Breaking Dawn – Part 2 didn’t experience an expected box office boost, despite being the grand finale of the popular franchise. Other finales have earned substantially more on their opening weekends, drawing in casual viewers who want to be part of the pop culture moment. In 2011 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opened 35 percent higher than its predecessor with $169.2 million. In 2005 Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (which was thought to be the final Star Wars film at the time) started with 36 percent more than its predecessor with $108.4 million. But it appears that The Twilight Saga is a different beast. Fans are either in — and they’ve been in for a few years — or they’re not interested.

Fortunately for Summit (a Lionsgate company following their acquisition earlier this year), who spent about $120 million to produce Breaking Dawn – Part 2, that cult of loyal fans is still gigantic. The film scored a blazing $34,717 per theater average from its 4,070 theaters — the best average at the entire box office. Twihards are known for rushing to the theater at the first possible moment, so Breaking Dawn – Part 2 is expected to fall quickly from here, but with the lucrative Thanksgiving frame coming up, it should enjoy at least one more massive weekend and climb to about $300 million total.
There’s still a chance that Breaking Dawn – Part 2 could become the highest grossing Twilight film domestically — though it seems unlikely given the fact that Breaking Dawn – Part 1 ($281.3 million) earned substantially less than Eclipse ($300.5 million). Yet, with an “A” CinemaScore grade form polled audiences, which were 79 percent female (hilariously, the 21 percent of the audience that was male represents the highest male ratio ever for a Twilight picture), there’s a chance that repeat viewings from super-fans could boost revenues. We’ll find out soon.
Last weekend’s champ, Skyfall, dipped 53 percent to $41.5 million in its second weekend, lifting its domestic total to $161.3 million after just ten days. The film will easily become the highest-grossing Bond film ever in the U.S. over the next few days — Quantum of Solace currently holds that distinction with $168.4 million.
Around the world, Skyfall, which cost Sony and MGM $200 million, has already become the highest grossing Bond ever. After a $49.6 million international frame this weekend, its overseas total stands at $507.9 million, and its worldwide gross has reached $669.2 million — easily the highest number ever for the 50-year-old series. Casino Royale was formerly the highest grossing Bond film with $599.2 million, but Skyfall smashed that record with ease and now looks like it will soar to at least $850 million.
Lincoln, Disney’s much buzzed-about Oscar contender, fared well in its expansion from 11 theaters into 1,775 locations, grossing $21.0 million over the Friday-to-Sunday period. Lincoln opened slightly higher than fellow Oscar front-runner Argo, which kicked off its run with $19.8 million last month (and now has $92.0 million total). Thanks to strong reviews and an “A” CinemaScore grade from audiences, 64 percent of which were 50 or older, the $65 million Steven Spielberg-directed film should hold up just as well — especially because older patrons typically take their time in coming out to the theater, and the upcoming holidays frees up many working adults’ schedules to go to the movies. Spielberg’s last film, War Horse, which was less well-received, galloped all the way to $79.9 million over the holidays after a $7.5 million opening weekend. With awards season right around the corner, Lincoln could make it to $100 million with ease.
Another Disney film came in fourth place. The videogame-themed animated effort Wreck-It Ralph dropped 45 percent to $18.3 million, and it now has $121.5 million total after three weekends. Next week, the $165 million family film goes head-to-head with Dreamworks’ animated adventure Rise of the Guardians.
Rounding out the Top 5 was Paramount’s $31 million Denzel Washington vehicle, Flight, which descended 42 percent to $8.6 million and now has $61.3 million total. The film isn’t holding up quite as strong as its great reviews — and $24.9 million debut — suggested it would. This weekend Flight added 565 theaters to its run (for 2,612 total), yet it still dropped substantially. It might not make it to $100 million, but it will be remembered as a solid hit for all parties involved.

1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 – $141.3 million
2. Skyfall – $41.5 million
3. Lincoln – $21.0 million
4. Wreck-It Ralph – $18.3 million
5. Flight – $8.6 million

Two films made their debuts in limited release this weekend — both to strong, if somewhat unremarkable, results. The Weinstein Co.’s Silver Linings Playbook, which has tried to present itself as both a romantic comedy and an Oscar hopeful, earned $458,000 from 16 theaters, giving it a $28,625 per theater average. Meanwhile, Focus’ Joe Wright-directed period piece Anna Karenina also opened in 16 theaters, taking in an estimated $315,000, good for a $19,688 average. Those figures certainly sound strong, so what’s unremarkable about them?

Well, consider the fact that Lincoln garnered an $85,846 average upon its debut in 11 theaters last weekend. When the film went wide this weekend, that number dropped all the way to $11,831 — still a strong result, but a substantial dilution that naturally occurs upon expansion. Silver Linings Playbook and Anna Karenina can’t afford to let their per theater averages drop by a similar ratio, and both will need to expand much more slowly and rely on terrific word-of-mouth to carry them to profitability.
Check back next week for full box office coverage of Life of Pi, Red Dawn, and Rise of the Guardians.

Breaking Dawn: Part 2’ trailer released: Bella becomes a vampire in latest 'Twilight' installment

Move over, Katniss – Bella is back.
Hot on the heels of the upstart “The Hunger Games” raking in a whopping $155 million opening weekend, Summit Entertainment has released a new 48-second teaser trailer for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” the final installment in the franchise that was the last big pop culture phenomenon.
The clip, which premiered during midnight screenings of “The Hunger Games,” gives Twi-hards a first look at Bella Swan (Kristin Stewart) as a blood-thirsty, newborn vampire.

"After 18 years of being utterly ordinary," she says in the video, "I finally found that I can shine."
As fans saw her in the cliff-hanger ending of the first installment of the two-part finale, Bella came back to life as a vampire after briefly dying following the birth of her half-human, half-vampire baby.

“We’re the same temperature now,” husband Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) coos to Bella.
The brief clip ends with the red-eyed beauty channeling her inner Katniss and hunting a deer in the woods, a skill she will have to learn in order to adapt to her new family’s rule of not killing humans for blood.
“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” hits theaters Nov. 16.

'Breaking Dawn - Part 2' Trailer: Five Things We Want To See

Now that we've seen the 15-second teaser, here's our wish list for the the trailer, in 'Twilight Tuesday.

Taylor Lautner in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2"

All right, "Twilight" fans: Now that we've had our curiosity piqued and our hearts made all aflutter via the release of the brand-new "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" trailer sneak peek, it's time to take a break from re-watching it 20 more times and think about what didn't make the 15-second spot that we hope we see in the full-length trailer debuting in front of "The Hunger Games" later this week.

This week's "Twilight" Tuesday is dedicated to our "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" trailer wish list, featuring thoughtful commentary from one of our favorite experts, Kallie Mathews, webmistress of TwilightSeriesTheories

So Bella is a vampire now. Hopefully that doesn't surprise anyone at this point, since everyone who saw "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" got a little sneak peek of those freaky-colored eyes of hers. As such, we should see a whole new side of Bella in this movie, including an arm wrestling match with Emmett. "I am hoping to see some vampire action in the full trailer," Mathews said. "There are some great training scenes from the book I hope they include, as well as some great cottage scenes with Bella and Edward! I expect to see lots of Bella as a vampire, and I'm OK with that!"

I've mentioned my enthusiasm for the new castmembers before, particularly my affection for Lee Pace, but it is worth repeating until more people appreciate him. Pace, whom you might recognize from his excellent work on the short-lived TV series "Pushing Daisies" or Tarsem's "The Fall," plays American nomadic vamp Garrett in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," and although he isn't one of the major players in the film, his character still has a nice arc and I'm dying to see more of him.

Remember when Edward and Bella had a baby? Of course you do; how can anyone forget that graphic scene? Anyway, baby Renesmee grows up really fast in the second film, and she's being played by beautiful young actress Mackenzie Foy, who has already told us a few adorable things about working with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. I would very much like to see her in action in the trailer.

I'm sure there is a highbrow, intellectual approach to take here, but instead, I'm going to channel my inner teenage girl and hope that we get to see some shirtlessness from Pattinson and Lautner. Trailers are all about enticing audiences to come see the movie, so why not serve up some gratuitous shots of the film's very handsome men for the very dedicated fans? "I have a feeling we will see tight close-ups of the Cullens, a shirtless werewolf and lots of trees," Mathews predicted. "Plus, you know there will be some great one-liners!"

In addition to the fanfare that surrounds the film's stars and the actual movie itself, there is plenty of enthusiasm for the various "Twilight" soundtracks that have been released over the years, so much so that certain bands have been rediscovered by making the cut. I'd like to hear either a familiar favorite, like Sleeping at Last's "Turning Page," or a brand-new and soon-to-be hit song over which we can swoon for a few months.

Twilight actress MyAnna Buring has admitted she finds the hype around the series a bit "insane".
The actress plays vampire Tanya in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Parts 1 and 2, and said although she is a huge fan of the franchise, she doesn't get too caught up in the hype.

She said: "Not hype as in the characters, or the actors playing the characters, because I'm not really wired like that."I get excited about things, and I love them but some of that hype is insane - wonderful, but absolutely insane. So I wasn't caught up in the hype in that extreme way, but I definitely was a fan, and when the books came out I read them in a week."

The actress - who has had roles in The Descent, Lesbian Vampire Killers and Kill List - also said she didn't find her part in the bloodsucking saga any more daunting than other projects because of its popularity.
She said: "No, I just felt incredibly excited. I think with the hype around the films, it was never anything that I thought would affect me so much - that was always reserved for the main characters in the story.

"If there's any hysterical hype, it's for the older characters. But any attention I've had has been really lovely and really supportive and welcoming. The Twilight fans are a lot like a family so I would never have felt daunted."

Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan in Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2

TWILIGHT fans can now get a sneak peak of movie heroine Bella Swan as a blood-thirsty vampire.

And these images are a first look at the long-awaited final movie, which won't be out until November.
In the final scenes from Breaking Dawn - Part 1, Bella (Kristen Stewart) was seen being turned into a vampire by her husband, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), after the birth of their daughter Renesmee left her body broken and dying.
At first the attempt to turn her into a blood-sucker seemed to have failed, but the very end of the flick showed her opening her newly blood-red eyes with a start.
Now a few lucky film buffs who queued up to buy Part 1 on DVD yesterday have been given an insight into what's to come in the fifth and final instalment of the hit film series.

They were shown an exclusive three-minute clip as well as behind-the-scenes images and interviews with cast members Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner — who plays werewolf Jacob Black.
The trailer carries on from where the last film left off, with Bella awakening as a vampire, her skin deathly white and her lips blood red.
She is seen reading a piece of paper that says: "Gather as many witnesses as you can before the snow sticks to the ground. That's when they'll come for us."
She then tells hubby Edward: "It's strange. Physically, I feel like I could demolish a tank. Mentally, I feel just drained."
Edward says to Bella: "I've had a bad habit of underestimating you.
"Every obstacle you've faced, I'd think you couldn't overcome it, but you just did. You're the reason I have something to fight for — a family."

Further in she discovers the paper is a page torn out of a copy of novel The Merchant Of Venice.
As with all of the vamp characters in the Twilight Saga, Bella has developed a super power — a higher level of self-control and the ability to project a shield protecting her and those around her.
Film-makers Lionsgate will be launching a preview of the trailer online at 3am on March 20, and the full trailer will be shown exclusively in cinemas from March 23 before new movie The Hunger Games

And there have been suggestions that while the adaptations of Stephanie Meyer's four novels end with this release, the movie series may be carried on.
When asked if there was a future for Twilight after Breaking Dawn, Lionsgate's chief executive Jon Feltheimer said: "It's hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700million-plus doesn't have ongoing value.

True love ... Bella and Edward
"It's an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration. So the simple answer is, 'Boy I hope so.'"
He then added that Lionsgate "certainly hope to" create a Twilight TV series.
